At the end of this course the student will understand the differences between running a business and being employed, how different business formats are dealt with by the Inland Revenue and will be able to decide whether or not setting up in business is a good idea for them. Students will be able to prepare business and marketing plans suitable for requesting finance for the business and will understand the operational overheads and legal requirements that running a business entails.

This course is intended for people who want to operate a small business alongside or instead of their existing employment and will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of doing this. It is aimed at people who have a product or service that they wish to market and at people who may be considering buying a franchise or joining a network marketing company. It will also be useful for people who would like to have their own business but as yet have nothing specific in mind. Students will require basic PC skills, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word (or equivalent software). Access to the internet would be useful.
